Do you hate your kitchen cabinets? Are they are making your kitchen look old and drab? Wish you could update your kitchen but don’t think you have the money for it? You might be surprised. There are several things you can do to update your kitchen without spending a fortune.
Some of the ideas we are going to explore can take several weeks to accomplish and your kitchen may be a mess during that time so you need to consider how much time you can have your kitchen in the middle of a remodel before you begin.
Painting
One way to update your kitchen cabinets is to paint them. This will take several weeks to accomplish so if you can’t live with your kitchen a mess for several weeks while the doors are off and the cabinets are empty this may not be the way to go for you. If you choose to go this way you may want to pick up a few totes that you can label for pots, pans, cooking utensils, spices, etc. to make it easier to find things while your cabinets are empty.
Painting you can choose a neutral colour that will go with almost anything so the next time you wish to change the walls or an appliance you do not have to worry will the colour go with my cabinets.
Staining
This is similar to painting; your kitchen will be a mess for a week or two however, instead of paint you will be using stain. Stain like paint will require some sanding of the cabinet facing and doors and drawers. You can also go from light to dark or dark to light. If you prefer wood to be natural looking then stain will be the way to go.
Embellishing paint and stains
You can do some embellishing with paint and stains to give your cabinets your own touch that will help them fit your kitchen. You can use paint to give definition to the cabinets and bring the kitchen together, with stains you can use decals strategically placed to bring out definition and make a statement with your kitchen.
New cabinets
New cabinets can be expensive. You can purchase already made cabinets or go for custom built cabinets. Custom will cost more but will be made specifically for your kitchen for a perfect fit, and the precise look you want. The workmanship of custom cabinets is what cost so much and unfortunately this probably isn’t something you can do yourself. Hiring a professional is probably your best choice when it comes to custom cabinet jobs.
