Should you consider DIY or use a professional
Bathrooms are one of the most important rooms in our households. Not only do we spend a fair amount of time here preparing for the day ahead, but it is an area where we can find time away from our busy lifestyles, away from the stress, away from the children. Essentially, it is one of the few places we can retreat to and get a few moments to relax in a nice hot steaming bath.
That said, bathrooms are often the first rooms in our house to receive a remodel. When it comes to remodeling your bathroom and installing that all-important centerpiece – the vanity cabinet – you have to ask yourself the following question.
Am I up to the task? Or do I need to hire a professional?
Let’s take a closer look.
Consider professionals for the following bathroom projects
- Vanity cabinet installations
Although there is nothing wrong with installing your bathroom vanity cabinet, it depends if you have had any experience in similar work before. Although installing a vanity is much like installing kitchen cupboards, there is one major difference – there are plumbing water pipes to consider. If you have any concerns or if you intend to move pipes and other plumbing fixtures so the cabinet is in a new location, then consider a professional.
- Tiling
Although tiling a floor can be a relatively easy task, a shower or tiling around a tub can be a little more difficult. If this is something you have never done before, consider a professional or maybe ask a friend who has the experience to help.
- Relocating plumbing and electrical points
For any task where plumbing pieces or water pipes need to be moved or electrical points relocated, be sure to use a professional. This not only ensures your safety but that the finished work adheres to building codes.
- Structural work
For any major structural work in the bathroom including extra walls, adding windows or putting in a new ceiling, a professional is the way to go. Why? Well some of these changes – structural ones in particular – will require a permit as well as skilled laborers and in some cases, plans will need to be drawn up by architects.
Do it yourself upgrades
- Painting
If your bathroom is a little ‘tired’ looking, a quick repaint can do the world of good. This is something that you can easily do yourself. Bathroom walls are the easiest to repaint, but consider a new coat for a vanity cupboard as well. This will take a little more prep work, however
- Changing various fixtures
Upgrading fixtures is another great way to give your bathroom a quick makeover. Fixtures you could consider include toilet seats, toilet fittings, shower fixtures, sink fixtures or even the handles and doors on your existing vanity cabinet.
- Decorating
Lastly, if you are on a tighter budget, accessorizing the bathroom can completely change its look at a fraction of the cost. Consider changing bathmats and window curtains, colour coding them if need be. Change toothbrush holders/fixtures, soap holders and other accessories to spruce up the overall look of your bathroom.
