Choosing the perfect bathroom vanity cabinet

Often an overlooked area of a bathroom’s design, a vanity cabinet can add the perfect finish touch to your bathroom. These cabinets however, need to fit in with the overall theme while remaining functional.

Taking a little time to research various styles, designs and functionality is worth the effort in the long run. Don’t just buy the first vanity you come across, you will regret it in the long run when you realize it just doesn’t fit in either in terms of looks or space wise.

What should you be looking for when deciding on a vanity cabinet?

Looks are important

Let’s be honest, a vanity cabinet might have all the storage space in the world, be totally functional and practical, but if it doesn’t look right, don’t buy it. Start by only looking at vanity cupboards that fit in with the overall theme of your bathroom be it modern, classical or period styled. Visualize how a piece will look when finally in place. Remember, a vanity cupboard can look very different in your bathroom as opposed to sitting on a showroom floor or even in a catalogue for that matter.

Consider the space and size available

It is always a good idea to know the exact dimensions you are working with when looking for that perfect bathroom vanity. Thinking it will fit in the required space is not good enough, especially when the vanity cupboard is delivered and you find that it is either too big or too small. Take the time to measure up the area where it will fit and remember to note how much space will be needed to open the doors fully. Other important size and space considerations include sink size, think single or double sink here and whether you have space or need space for a mirror.

Consider all connections

When making a choice as to where you want the vanity cupboard to be placed in your bathroom, take into account all plumbing and electrical connections. If you are completely redoing a bathroom and want to change the location of the vanity cupboard, these connections will have to be moved accordingly. As a way to lower plumbing costs, consider placing the vanity cupboard on a wall where either a shower or bath are already located.  As for electrical plug points, be sure that your desired location will not fall foul of any housing design laws, especially in terms of their location to plumbing.

Making the final choices

Vanity cupboards come in a variety of designs and styles. Many modern trends call for wall mounted units, although the more traditional free-standing variety are still popular. Other considerations include counter top material, locations of basins, additional shelving (if needed) and mirrors.

Finding the correct vanity cupboard need not be a complicated process, a little preparation goes a long way in ensuring you one perfect for your bathroom.
