Choosing the correct top for your bathroom vanity
A vanity top is the crowning piece of your bathroom vanity cabinet. As so many different styles are available, manufacturers will often give you a choice of finish. Alternatively, you may decide just to replace the top of your current vanity. Let’s have a look at the preferred options available.
Wood
This is perhaps one of the most versatile countertop surfaces and favored by many. Not only is it simple to install once cut to size but very easy to care for. The main drawback of wood is its vulnerability to water. If it is not sealed properly, water will seep into the wood, either directly from the surface or steam from a bath or shower. When choosing a wooden surface, ensure that you seal it correctly and retreat it with sealant every so often. Particular care should be taken around all plumbing fixtures.
Laminate
When looking for excellent value for money, consider laminate. It is constructed out of various layers of thin plastic which are heated and pushed together. Laminate needs no special treatment and is extremely easy to clean. Not only that, but it is waterproof, so leaks, standing water or steam cannot harm the countertop in any way. Laminate can burn – more of a problem for a kitchen countertop – while it does become duller as the years roll by. Lastly, if it does chip, it is not easily fixed. Many people choose laminate for its cost effectiveness as well as the fact that it is available in many colours and patterns.
Tile
Ceramic tiles are another popular countertop option for a bathroom vanity. Not only are tiles durable, but they are also available in a large variety of types, colours and textures, making them an attractive, fairly inexpensive option. One drawback of a tile countertop are the grout lines found in between tiles. These can be difficult to keep clean and attract mold and mildew very easily. Luckily, they can be sealed which does help alleviate the problem somewhat. Installation of a tile countertop is tricky, especially if you have never done it before, therefore you may need professional help.
Granite/Marble
Perhaps the most beautiful option available for a countertop is a natural stone such as granite or marble. Granite is very popular, as it is hardier than marble and does not stain as easily while natural marble is offers an extremely elegant and attractive option. Both granite and marble countertops must be carefully looked after. In fact, marble can scratch fairly easily and this cannot be removed.
Solid surface material
Solid surface countertops are made from a form of crushed stone – quartz is popular – which is then molded together with acrylic resin. These are then heated and formed into the material from which countertops are made. Countertops made from this material are extremely strong and robust and do not need much maintenance. Minor damage to the countertop, such as scratches, can easily be repaired by sanding them away.
Ultimately, when it comes to choosing a countertop, it comes down to the size of your budget and personal preference. Having said that, the above range of options should provide something you will be more than happy with.
