The duration taken by home renovations vary based on different factors. These include:
- Whether you are doing DIY renovation or you have hired a contractor and his crew
- The time of the year (winter renovations may take longer due to logistical challenges such as delayed deliveries)
- Your budget (this will dictate such things as if you can get your supplies at the right time and the size of your contractor’s crew)
- Whether you make changes halfway through the project
The most obvious factor affecting the duration of a home renovation is the room or area being renovated. The bigger and more complex the scope of the project, the longer it will take. Below is the time taken with the most common renovations projects (kitchen and bathroom renovations and room additions).
Research & Planning
You should always do adequate research on any remodeling project. Planning is also important as it ensures you do not change your mind mid-project. This includes transferring ideas from your head to a paper as a sketch, doing as many revisions as necessary, and coming up with the final plan. Depending on the scope of the project, this will usually take between 2 weeks and 2 months.
The Kitchen
A kitchen remodel is important because it gives your home a fresh look and feel and it increases the resale value of your home. Kitchen remodeling is one of the biggest renovation projects you can take. An average kitchen remodeling project takes between 4 and 6 months. The remodeling takes time because, other than a new floor plan, you also have to give time for cabinets, plumbing, fixtures, appliance replacement, countertops, and backsplash.
The Bathroom
Renovating a bathroom also increases the resale value of a house. The remodeling is less complex compared to the kitchen. It includes changing fixtures, installing ceramic tiles around porcelain-on-steel tubs, replacing the old toilet with low-flow toilets, increasing storage space, and upgrading plumbing. The average project will take around 2 months, but with fixtures like Jacuzzis it might take up to 3 months.
Room Addition
Adding an extra room takes a shorter time than most people imagine. This is because there will be no existing walls, fixtures, appliances, and other items to work through. This project starts with the contractor examining ground conditions to ensure there are no foundation and other structural issues. If there are no structural issues, this will only take between 1 and 2 months.
Pre-construction stage
Pre-construction is very important if the project is to be smooth. It should include such things as getting the relevant permits, drawing up and signing a contract with your contractor, and sourcing for the relevant materials and supplies. Give this stage about 3 months.
