You’ve just remodeled your kitchen and have had brand new cabinets installed, now you need to make sure to take care of them with regular maintenance and by using proper cleaning solutions on them.
- Be sure to read the information that came with your cabinets on care and how to clean them. Save this information for further use.
- Treat your wood cabinetry just as you would any of the other wood furniture you own. Wipe up spills and water rings immediately. Never hang damp dish clothes or towels over the cabinet doors, as this could cause water damage from the moisture. Moisture can lead to mold which can cause health issues and you will have to replace cabinets if it is too bad.
- Dust your cabinets with a soft cloth, spray a light spray of furniture polish on the cloth and gently rub on the cabinet doors and drawers. Do one section at a time and make sure that all the polish excess is wiped off. This should be done regularly, every time you dust your other wood furniture dust your kitchen cabinets as well.
- For tough stains, use a soft cloth with a solution of mild nonabrasive dishwasher detergent you have placed on cloth to dampen it. Gently rub with the grain. Never go against the grain of the wood, use an abrasive compound, or a harsh cleaner that could damage the finish of your cabinet.
- Never use your dishcloth to wipe cabinets as it could contain left over detergent or grease.
- For cleaning interior, wipe out cabinet with a damp soft cloth and dry.
- If you have glass on your cabinet doors, never spray the glass with glass cleaner as it could harm the wood or its finish. Instead spray a small amount on a lint free cloth or paper towel and then wipe the glass down.
- When cleaning the hardware portion, never use abrasive or harsh metal cleaners on knobs, pulls, or hinges. If it were to get on the cabinet it could do damage to the wood. Buff the hardware with a clean dry soft cloth.
- Repair any damaged finishes, just make sure that you go the cabinet manufacture for a repair kit as they could have employed several processes when finishing the cabinets. If they do not have kits, they may offer colour coating, felt-tip pens, or putty sticks to match finishes just make sure you read the instructions and follow them carefully or you could cause even more damage.
- Every 6 months to a year check the hardware; make sure that the hardware is tight instead of loose. Just make sure you do not over tighten the hardware as this could cause the wood to split or cause the hole to be too big.
By following the instructions provided by the manufacture and the above tips you can perform routine maintenance and daily care as well as weekly care to keep your cabinets looking brand new for many years to come.
