BATHROOM RENOVATION MISTAKES TO AVOID – REDO YOUR BATHROOM WITH MINIMUM EFFORT
A bathroom renovation is not the easiest job in the world and it takes planning and precision to complete the job properly. If you are not careful or you do not choose the right contractor to perform the job, you may be unhappy with the job performed and you will be left spending thousands more to redo your entire bathroom.
Below, we will go over some bathroom renovation mistakes that you should avoid and keep your eye out for. Avoiding them and preventing them from occurring will ensure that you are happy with the job that is done.
Mistake 1. Not Having a Budget and Overspending
When it comes down to it, make sure that you budget for the project and you remain within your budget. If you know that you can afford to spend $15,000 on your remodel, do NOT spend $30,000 on it. You are only hurting yourself.
In fact, you should avoid overspending when you redo your bathroom as well. It can be easy to go wild and choose all of the best materials and fixtures, but not only is this no very cost conscious, it is not recommended. Your bathroom’s remodel should not cost you more than what your home is worth.
Mistake 2. Not Having a Plan in Place
It can be easy to simply jump into a bathroom remodel without actually thinking about what you want to have done. Before you do this though, you need to have a plan in place. If you do not, you may buy unneeded items or you may purchase something on a whim and then end up hating it later on down the road.
Mistake 3. Overcrowding
While you may want that huge vanity with the double sinks, you probably do not have enough room for it and if you jam it into the bathroom, you will find that your space is crowded and you do not enjoy being inside the bathroom.
Your bathroom renovation needs to take the space you have available into account and work with it. Always purchase fixtures and accessories that do not take up more than a small portion of the space in your bathroom.
Mistake 4. Choosing Trendy Design Materials
While it is okay to want to be trendy and hip with the times, the bathroom is not the place to do it. In fact, when you redo your bathroom do NOT use items that are “in” style right now, but use styles that will be evergreen and not date your bathroom.
Remember, you can decorate with trendy items and remove them later on when the time comes. If you choose trendy fixtures, you would need to perform another bathroom remodel just to remove them.
Mistake 5. Not Correcting Mistakes
If you accidentally make a mistake when renovating your bathroom, it is okay. Do not punish yourself for it, but do make sure you correct it. Remember, if you can see the mistake, so can everyone else who walks into your bathroom.
If you need help with your upcoming bathroom renovation, rely on the professionals at Kitchen & Bath Inc. to guide you.
Mistake 6. DIY waterproofing
A leaking shower is one of the most common bathroom problems and it is challenging to get it fixed. Thus, it is important to get bathroom waterproofing done by a professional. That means seeking the services offered by a certified-waterproofing tradesman, and upon the completion of the project, make sure you get a waterproofing warranty and certificate.
If you plan to sell the property after redoing your bathroom, you may be required to produce the warranty and waterproofing certificate. Note that you should keep an eye on follow up trade once the waterproofing project is complete. This is because even a minor nick in the waterproofing membrane or a broken tile can compromise the overall waterproofing project and result in a leaky bathroom.
Mistake 7. Not having enough storage
Enough storage in your bathroom is essential, just like all other rooms within your home. Remember, you need ample space for your medicine, cosmetics, hairdryers, shavers, wet towels, dry towels, straighteners, and everything else that can be kept in your bathroom. Having enough storage space in your bathroom makes it appropriate for nearly anything you intend to keep in your bathroom for convenience.
Additionally, a spacious bathroom allows installation and access to vanity drawers compared to doors. You may want to choose over bench mirrored shaving cabinets if you want to keep some items away from your fingers. Lastly, heated towel rails are essential for family bathrooms as they have the capacity to hold many towels, and they will always be dry and fluffy.
Mistake 8. Poor ventilation
The ideal definition of horror is to note those black specks of mold matching up a newly renovated bathroom. This problem is closely linked to poor ventilation in your bathroom. You probably have good open windows to let in some fresh air into your bathroom.
However, you need more than just fresh air to keep your bathroom free from mold. You require an exhaust fan or high-quality IXL-tastic to help remove the steam. It’s also recommended to paint your bathroom walls with oil-based paint or mold-resistant products. This will lessen the risk of mold development in your bathroom.
Mistake 9. Improper task lighting
Most of the bathroom activities need functional lighting. Waxing, application of makeup, shaving, and various hairstyling activities are challenging to handle under general ambient light. Thus, installing some form of perfectly-designed task lighting is recommended.
One of the effective ways of achieving an excellently lit bathroom is by installing a large mirror over the vanity or basin along with lighting fixtures that direct light to your face. Note that there are some sleek lighting options in the market.
Mistake 10. Improper drainage
Nearly every wet floor causes frequent falls, and one of the dangerous places to slide and fall is in your bathroom. Therefore, make sure your bathroom floor slopes gently for the water to drain away quickly. Note that installing large format floor tiles makes it more challenging to achieve this gentle slope.
Mistake 11. Comply with Building Codes
This also won’t be a problem if you hire a reputable contractor in the Oakville or Mississauga area to redo your bathroom. Building codes are for a reason, whether it’s function, safety, or accessibility. Ignoring them could lead to problems down the road, whether it’s issues with functionality or buyers who are hesitant to purchase a home that had work done that is not code-compliant.
Mistake 12. With Older Homes, Beware Asbestos and Lead
If your home was built before 1984, asbestos is likely going to be an issue in the walls, as well as the ceilings and floors. If this is the case, you’ll need a professional to come in and safely remove it. In homes that were built before 1978, lead paint is often a concern. A professional can test the paint in your home for the presence of lead, as well as remove it in a way that does not spread the deadly dust all over your home or put you and your family in danger.
